"But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet." 1 Thessalonians 5:8 (NIV)
It is quite easy to lose control when your emotions are running wild. We sometimes lose control when we are influenced by other people's behaviour or thoughts towards us. A person living in unforgiveness and malice is not in control of his life, because when he sees or thinks of the person that has hurt him, his or her emotions run wild.
Self-control is part of the fruits of the Spirit according to Galatians 5:22. The Bible says, we will be known by our fruits, so it is essential that this fruit is seen in our life.
Self-control is essential in every area of our lives; we need to be in control of our emotions, appetites, mind and body. We need to challenge ourselves to hold back those anger outbursts, to hold back from eating things we know are not good for our heath, to say no to food when God is calling us to fast.
It's amazing what you can do when you try, some might think, they can't fast, but yes you can, only if you set your mind to and tell your body what to do.
It's interesting to know that your body, mind and emotions can actually do your bidding if you train it to; the Holy Spirit living in us should be in charge, it may take time, but you need to take a step and keep at it, don't give up, set your mind to do it, be in control, take charge of your life, you can live a victorious life.
