The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Folashade Ogunsola has urged Nigerians to allow a peaceful transmission of power following the successful conduct of the general elections.

She said that they must also shun all forms of violence for the nation to remain peaceful and united.

Prof Ogunshola stated this at the 28th Ramadan Lecture of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) at the Prof Nurudeen Alao Hall (DLI), Akoka.

She said: “As our country moves on from the general elections, I recommend that we shun ethnocentrism and all forms of violence like Islam recommends and embodies. In line with the theme of this lecture, I appeal that while we continue to monitor our leaders to ensure accountability, may we begin to look inwards as citizens to query how we are also showing up in our roles as members of the society and in our professional roles. The leaders of communities are chosen from their citizens and our leaders are, therefore, a reflection of who we are as a people. We are better empowered to hold our leaders accountable when we are also law abiding and discharge our responsibilities.”

The UNILAG Vice Chancellor hailed UMA for years of continued support towards socio-economic development of the institution.

In his lecture, former Chairman of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) Dr Muiz Banire said that any society without the rule of Law cannot achieve required transformation. According to him, most of the political class hardly knows reason they are given the mandate to lead.

Banire said the failure of accountability by the leadership will lead the nation to nowhere.

Banire stated that justice and transparency are core values any leader must showcase to transform any society.

The second lecturer, Sheikh Dhikrullahi Shafi’i urged electorate to ensure those elected are kept on their toes.

According to him, those saddled with leadership responsibilities will render account to Allah in the hereafter.

The Islamic Scholar noted that the aspect of immunity for some public office holders is unacceptable as it only breeds corruption and injustice in the society.

UMA President, Prof Khalid Adekoya said the group since 2002 had awarded 156 Scholarships in various categories assuring that they will continue to partner with UNILAG in improving the academic environment.
