The member representing Akwanga, Wamba and Nasarawa Eggon Constituency in the House of Representatives, Jeremiah Umaru, has expressed concerns over the surge in kidnapping activities in Nasarawa State.

Umaru raised the alarm over the security situation in the state during plenary on Thursday.

Calling for urgent attention in tackling the problem, he lamented that the state is gradually transforming into a sanctuary for armed criminals and kidnappers.

According to him, the situation is posing a significant threat to the safety of residents of the state.

Umaru blamed the insecurity in Nasarawa on the mass infiltration of criminals from neighboring states, stressing that if left unchecked, the problem will have dire economic consequences for the state and Nigeria as a whole.

In its resolution, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to establish permanent security formations to strengthen security in the state.

The committees on Defence, Army, Air Force and Police Affairs, as well as Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, were directed to ensure compliance with the resolution.

Nasarawa State has witnessed a surge in kidnappings for ransom in recent times with the abduction of students and prominent individuals, including the former Deputy Governor of the state, Professor Onje Gye-Wado, and traditional leaders like Gom Mama, HRH Alhaji Bala Adams Zubairu, and Sarkin Gurku, HRH Alhaji Jibril Mamman Waziri, as well as his wife, Hajiya Sa’adatu Waziri.
