Understanding the Mystery of the Body of Christ

Understanding the Mystery of the Body of Christ

We are fully aware of the term "Body of Christ"; however, there is a scarcity of revelation of the meaning of the term among many professing Christians across the world. Usually, we believe that the body of Christ is another word for the Church, hence, we normally like to describe ourselves as members of the body of Christ. While that school of thought is not wrong, it has a tendency of breeding a narrowed understanding of the term in everyone that subscribes to such school of thought.

I understand that the authority for legal residence and work on this earth was given to men by God. As we know, in our contemporary time, no person can successful migrate to another country to reside and work except he or she has a residence and work permit from the host nation. In same vein, when God created the earth and He built it for function; He handed over the permit for residence and work to the first man, his wife and their children. No wonder the Scripture says in the book of Psalms 115:16, "The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD's; but the earth He has given to the children of men."

It therefore becomes clear that every man on earth has a legal permit under God to live and work on the earth. Moving on from there, we must know that each time God intended to do anything on earth for His purpose, He requested for a man - a man to stand in the gap; a man to say restore; a man to heal the sick; a man to deliver the captives; a man to lead the people of God in righteousness and justice. Let us observe a serious matter in the heart of God as it concerns getting a man to fulfill His purpose on the earth.

"But this is a people robbed and plundered; all of them are snared in holes, and they are hidden in prison houses; they are for prey, and no one delivers; for plunder, and no one says, "Restore!""

Isaiah 42:22

If you look are the words of that Scripture very carefully, you would see how important it is for God to have at least one person to fulfill His purpose. The purpose of God for those people who are plundered and robbed is restoration; yet, there will be no restoration for men, until a man SPEAKS restoration. It therefore becomes clear that God is powerful, unlimited and caring; yet, because of His faithfulness and integrity, He cannot intervene in our countless situations on earth except we invite Him.

When the LORD concluded on visiting the children of men, He chose to come to the earth even as a Man. And when He came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. Then I said, 'Behold, I have come - In the volume of the book it is written of Me - To do Your will, O God.'" (Hebrews 10:5-7) Hence, Jesus became a Body of Christ on earth, through which Christ obtains legality to reside and work on the earth. No wonder the book of Isaiah 9:6 says very boldly that a Child was born, and the Son was given - indeed, the Son was not born: For the Son is God! Through Jesus, Christ came to the earth; however, His presence on earth was limited to the body of Jesus and He was only able to go places that Jesus could reach.

Therefore, after Jesus had completed His assignment on earth in the land of Israel, He told His disciples that it was needful that He leaves, for until He leaves, the Holy Spirit cannot come, but if He leaves, He will send the Holy Spirit from the Father to them. And behold, in the book of Acts 1-2. Jesus told them to remain at Jerusalem until they have been endowed with power from above. He told them to wait from the promise of the Father, which is the presence of the Spirit of Christ in each disciple of Jesus Christ. Hence, Christ will no longer be limited to one location, but spread abroad through the disciples of Jesus Christ.

May I say very strongly that the body of Christ is the human tabernacle for the residence and working of the Holy Spirit on the earth. Remember, according to the book of Philippians 2:13 "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. "The question then is, "how does God work in men to will and to do His good pleasure?" The answer is not far-fetched, God works in men to will and to do His good pleasure through the Spirit of Christ in them. Therefore, you and I are bodies of Christ. For the sake of simplicity, I am a body of Christ, assigned and prepared by Christ for good works on earth through the Spirit of Christ in me. And just like Apostle Paul, I say, "I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me!"

Please, do not sit down with your hands folded and legs crossed, complaining to God about the situation of things in your marriage, family, community and country - For the Lord is counting on you to bear or carry Him to those places so that He can change things for the better. May the Lord help you to understand this mystery!
