The Significance of the Throne of David for all Disciples of Jesus Christ

The Significance of the Throne of David for all Disciples of Jesus Christ

This is not an article on discipleship per se; however, I believe that every disciple of Christ Jesus in any nation on the earth can and will benefit from the understanding that the Holy Spirit is bringing to the Church; towards preparing her for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Some good numbers of people have a misguided understanding about Jesus Christ; how He came to the earth; why He came to the earth and the implications of His arrival to the earth on them. Let me start very early with these thoughts:

  • Jesus did not come to start a new religion;
  • Jesus is not the Son of a priest;
  • Jesus was not born to the priestly family;
  • Jesus did not come to consolidate or establish existing norm or order or tradition.

Let us start our short discuss with a prophecy that preceded the birth of Jesus; for in that prophecy lies the foundation for the significance of the throne of David.

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,

Though you are little among the thousands of Judah;

Out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel,

Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.

Micah 5:2

If you examine that Scripture very well, you will realize that the problem of the people of Israel and the world did not require God to raise a Priest from the division of Aaron or the tribe of Levi; instead, it required God to raise One to be Ruler over them. Remember, before Jacob died, he blessed his children and told Judah that ‘the scepter shall not depart from him; nor the lawgiver from between his feet’; you would then realize why God had to choose a Man from his tribe to rule over His people.

However, from the time of Judah to the time of David; there was no king over Israel from the tribe of Judah – David was the first king of Israel (Jews) from the tribe of Judah! Therefore, David became the foundation of rulership for the tribe of Judah – for while Judah received the covenant; David established the covenant of kingship of his tribe in Israel. Hence, David is the model throne, that God took time to build; through which every other throne from the tribe of Judah and even from Israel is built or judged.

No wonder, after the death of David, God began to measure the righteousness, effectiveness and efficiency of other succeeding kings in Israel by the standard of David the king.

….He was twenty-five years old when he became king,, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoadan of Jerusalem. And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like his father David; he did everything as his father Joash had done.

2 Kings 14:2-3

If you observe closely, you would realize that this Scripture is about many generations after David; yet David was the standard, through which others were judged by God. It therefore appears to me that ever since the time Israel was carried away in captivity to Babylon; God had been preparing to restore Israel and raise up another king from the tribe of Judah, who will not only sit on the throne of David; but also out-perform the power, wisdom, authority and influence of David.

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:1

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

Luke 1:30-33

Contrary to what many of us have been taught over the years; our Lord Jesus Christ is not just the Saviour, He is the Lord and the King. Remember, He often use the phrase, “the Son of Man”; that ‘Man’ is David; and He (Jesus) was born to sit on the throne of David; reconciling the people of Israel back to the King of kings; and making the whole world drawn to God through His relationship with the people of Israel. That is why Jesus told the Samarian woman that “Salvation is of the Jews”.

The purpose of God is to save Israel by giving them the One to rule over them; and making them an example for the other nations. But lo, the Jews rejected Him; hence, the good news of the redemption (salvation and enthronement), which Jesus primarily brought for the Jews is made available to the nations of the earth.

While Jesus was with His disciples in the nation of Israel; He told them to focus on the lost sheep of Israel that He was sent to shepherd (lead); but when He was going back to God; He told the disciples to go into all the world – teaching, baptizing and discipling the  nations. He told them to simply replicate His dominion in Israel in other nations. He told them to spread the influence, culture and power of His kingdom to all nations. That is what the early disciples did and that is what you and I must do.

Remember, when Jesus was born; the only person that was enraged was Herod the king, which also confirms that Jesus was not a threat to the priests; but to the kings. He did not come to the earth to set up a parallel or another religion; but to establish and expand the frontiers of His kingdom on the earth.

For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,

Prince of Peace

Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.

Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and

 establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 9:6-7

If you are a true disciple of Jesus Christ as you profess; then I must ask you a question. Have you found the throne of David? Has the Lord Jesus Christ ever revealed Himself to you as the King of glory? Have you always thought that your throne is only in heaven? Have you always believed that all you are expected to do is to attend religious functions?

If you are a disciple indeed; your goal must be to become like your Master and to be where He is. Jesus is the King, because He sits on the throne of His father David. Remember, Christ required Jesus to redeem the earth: For Jesus is the Son of Man (the body that was prepared for Christ according to the book of Hebrews 10:5-7). The point is, just as God raised up Jesus as the King, He is equally passionate to raise us up with Jesus to sit with Him in dominion on this earth.

However, the throne is a spiritual one; and until you become truly spiritual; you will not be able to see the throne, nor sit with Jesus in glory. True discipleship is indeed a spiritual experience of intimacy with Christ in the walk and work of dominion on the earth.
