Resignation: The Only Honorable Thing Left For PMB

Resignation: The Only Honorable Thing Left For PMB

I think it is high time we moved away from the story of Evans the billionaire kidnapper that has trended in almost all of the social media platforms and ask pertinent questions about the state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari. With all sense of modesty, I don’t think it would be out of place if Nigerians collectively put pressure on the authority to tell us whether Mr. President can continue to function in that office. I know the constitution allows him to be away for as long as possible provided he duly handed over the affairs of the nation to his deputy. But I do not think there is a provision in the constitution that says Nigerians cannot know the true state of health of their president.

Come to think of it, this is a man that became president on the popular whims of Nigerian voters. I think it would be unjust if the same Nigerians who made Muhammadu Buhari the president he is today will be kept in the dark concerning his health status. It is true that anyone can fall sick at any time, but the continuous politicization of the president’s health status has continued to raise doubts in the heart of Nigerians, of whether Buhari can still continue to lead this nation.

Now, it has been 50 days since the president left the country to treat himself of this undisclosed ailment in a UK hospital and this time, with no public appearance in whatsoever form. Even the wife of the president was not allowed to see him the other time she traveled to the UK. The minister of information and the president’s media aides cannot boast that they have had a word with the president since his departure in May 7. The closest Nigerians have seen so far is an Eid-el-Fitr audio message from a recorded phone broadcast in His native Hausa language. I guess this was in a move to suppress the rumor making the rounds that Mr. President is suffering from speech impairment and which has affected his communication ability.

There is no more lie about it that Muhammadu Buhari lacks both the physical and mental capacity to continue to lead this nation. It would be more honorable for him to resign and continue to take care of his health. Nigeria is at a critical time where it require whosever at the helm of affairs to be on his feet. The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo is trying, especially at ensuring that Nigeria’s unity is not threatened by those preaching hail stone and fire, but the truth is there are a lot of things that he cannot dabble into being in the acting capacity. For the sake of the nation, and the continue welbeing of Nigeria, President Buhari should honorably resign. That is just the only right and honorable thing to do now.
