BREAKING: Senate Rejects Magu As Substantive EFCC Chairman

The Senate once again on Wednesday rejected the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the second time. The Department of State Services (DSS) had written another letter to the Senate insisted that Magu failed the ‘integrity test’ and therefore not qualified to lead the commission.

Intervening in the process, the former Senate Majority leader, Ali Ndume in a point of order however opposed Magu’s rejection, stating that the Senate recieved two different letters from the DSS. Although Mr. Magu had answered to the satisfaction of lawmakers earlier questions he was asked, senators challenged his suitability given the report against him by the DSS. Mr. Magu also did not hold back as he questioned the credibility of the DSS which he said dispatched two reports on him with varying contents same day.  “What do you say about credibility of that agency?” he questioned.

Senator Dino Melaye (APC)vrepresenting Kogi Central, stated that following his rejection, the Senate should mandate the most senior officer to take over. Senate President Bukola Saraki however said in his concluding speech “We should not rubbish the entire institution because of an individual.”
